Pest Management

Mobile technologies and natural enemies

This project, "Using Mobile Technologies to Forecast and Track Natural Enemy Effectiveness on Cereal Aphids in Changing Landscapes" was funded by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The overarching goal of this project was to expand the accessibility of existing pest management tools by using smartphone technologies and other sophisticated yet accessible devices to develop a wide-area monitoring and management system to account for changes in land use and bioenergy demands.

Managing H. zea in late-season sorghum

Several lepidopteran species infest developing panicles. Larval identification is challenging and time intensive, so current recommendations are often simplified by treating all larvae equally across species. Consequently, the yield-loss model developed for corn earworm (Helicoverpa zea) by Buckley and Burkhardt (1962) has been the foundation for management recommendations in modern sorghum Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programs for the last 49 years.

Auto-detecting corn pests

Focus of this Kansas Corn Commission grant is to develop an automated scouting tool that will aid producers and consultants in detecting pests in corn fields using a camera fixed to a remote controlled ground drone.
