Ecosystem Services

Patch burn grazing and pollinator services

North American rangelands are managed primarily for livestock production, yet they have enormous potential to conserve native biodiversity while maintaining livestock productivity. Although pollinators are critical to the maintenance of healthy rangelands, livestock production, ecosystem services, and economies, they are a group of wildlife of greatest conservation concern that would benefit directly from changes in current rangeland management practices.

Biofuels and ecosystem services

Sustainability of the nation’s bioenergy feedstock production relies on selection and placement of energy crops that efficiently generate biomass without compromising existing agricultural systems. Pest and beneficial arthropods (e.g., pollinators, predators) will occur in these feedstock crops, but the effect of habitat utilization is unknown, as there is little experience with expansive monocultures of biofuel crops. This research will advance knowledge of risks or benefits from placing large biofuel crop monocultures into established agricultural landscapes.

Mobile technologies and natural enemies

This project, "Using Mobile Technologies to Forecast and Track Natural Enemy Effectiveness on Cereal Aphids in Changing Landscapes" was funded by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The overarching goal of this project was to expand the accessibility of existing pest management tools by using smartphone technologies and other sophisticated yet accessible devices to develop a wide-area monitoring and management system to account for changes in land use and bioenergy demands.
